A Delicate Balance is a stage play by Edward Albee, it was first premiered at the Martin Beck Theater dated back in September 22, 1996. From the time of its formation, the Broadway production ran in 132 performances and 12 previews, the whole Broadway production was originally under the direction of Alan Schneider.
The play follows a story about Tobias and Agnes, a long-time married couple whose concern at the moment is to maintain their equilibrium as they welcome home their 36-year old daughter after her marriage failed for the fourth time. They also provide a home for their family-friends Harry and Edna, who asked to stay with them to free from the unknown terror they have been running from, and dealing with Aan Agnes’ Alcoholic sisternamed Claire also appears to be extremely uneasy and disrupting.
The broadway production ‘A Delicate Balance’ starred Jessica Tandy as Agnes, Hume Cronyn as Tobias, Henderson Forsyth as Harry, Rosemary Murphy as Claire, Carmen Matthews as Edna Marian Seldes as Julia.
After the production has reached a total of 27 previews, a revival was launched by the Lincoln Center Theater based at the Plymouth Theater on April 21, 1996 and ran in over 185 performances. It was under the direction of Gerald Gutierrez, which has featured another set of casting including Rosemary Haris, George Grizzard, John Carter, Elain Stritch, Elizabeth Wilson and Mary Beth Hurt.
For the record, the Broadway production ‘A Delicate Balance’ won the Tony Award for the ‘Best Revival of a Play’ and a Drama Desk Award for the ‘Outstanding Revival of a Play’.
In the year 2013, the production was re-produced at the Mc Cartner Theater under Emily Mann’s direction, the show starred John Glover as Tobias and Kathleen Chalfant as as Agnes with costumes and lightings set by Jennifer Von Maryhauser and Lap Chi Chu.
A Delicate Balance is currently running as a new revival directed by Pam Mackinson, it plays on Broadway.
